The Reading Practice

New Yoga Savannah’s book club, in which we read fiction, nonfiction, and memoir through the contemplative lens of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. Rather than asking what the author intended, we ask what the story reveals when illuminated by a timeless yogic teaching.

Our Autumn Semester — Fall 2026

All the Way to the River
by Elizabeth Gilbert

A deeply personal memoir of grief, healing, and the courage to keep moving forward, All the Way to the River explores what it means to meet life's inevitable changes with openness rather than resistance. This month, we'll pair Gilbert's journey with Patanjali's teachings on abhyasa (steady practice) and vairagya (non-attachment), considering how resilience is cultivated one step—and one breath—at a time.

Lonesome Dove
by Larry McMurtry

More than an epic Western, Lonesome Dove is a profound meditation on friendship, purpose, love, and the impermanence of life. As we travel the trail with Gus and Call, we'll explore Patanjali's invitation to live with presence and equanimity, reflecting on how attachment, duty, and acceptance shape the choices we make and the lives we leave behind.

Lincoln in the Bardo
by George Saunders

Blending history, imagination, and compassion, Lincoln in the Bardo follows a grieving father and the restless spirits caught between holding on and letting go. Through Patanjali's teachings on attachment, misperception, and liberation, we'll consider what prevents us from moving forward—and what grace may be found in release.
